Blower Door - Pressure Diagnostic Testing

How “Tight” or “Loose” Is Your Home?

THE Most Critical Factor in evaluating the energy performance of a home is to determine its air infiltration rate - or more commonly, how “tight” or ”loose” the house is. The ONLY way to accurately determine this is by performing a Blower Door Test on the home.

Basically, a Blower Door is a high tech device with a fan and various gauges and hoses that is set up in an exterior doorway of the home. Once set up, the Blower Door can either pressurize or depressurize the home to pre-determined points where a number of measurements are taken.

The laws of physics dictate that every house will continually expel and replace its internal volume of air over time. Some of the factors the Blower Door will determine are:
  1. How many times per hour does this occur.
  2. Exactly where is the air coming in from and going out through.
  3. How much energy loss is the air leakage causing.
  4. Should additional mechanical ventilation be added to the home.
A general target for a home without heat recovery ventilation is to naturally replace its internal volume of heated or cooled air about .35 times per hour or about 1 whole house air change every 3 hours. If the house is “tighter” than the .35 target, then there is an increased chance of indoor air quality problems occurring. If the house is “looser” than the .35 target, then the heating and cooling systems will turn on more often and will use more energy to keep the home at a set temperature. It also means that you will be paying more to heat or cool your home than you should be paying.
